What is Seloken used for?
Seloken tablets and durules (a long acting oral tablet) are used to reduce high blood pressure (hypertension), and to treat angina (chest pain caused by too little oxygen reaching the heart muscle), irregular and/or rapid heart beats (arrhythmia), myocardial infarction (heart attack), in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle), heart disorders with palpitations (irregular and/or forceful beating of the heart), migraine prophylaxis and over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

Seloken is also available as an injection. The injection is usually used in hospital to treat arrhythmias and myocardial infarction (heart attack).

How does Seloken work?

Seloken works by blocking the action of a chemical called noradrenaline, which is released from nerves in the heart to control its rhythm. Seloken also blocks another chemical called adrenaline, which is a hormone (chemical signal carried in the blood) that has similar effects to noradrenaline. Seloken does this by stopping these chemicals from attaching (binding) to sites, called beta-receptors, in the heart so that they can’t produce their effects.

  • Seloken reduces the heart rate and is useful in treating abnormally rapid heart rhythms.

  • It also reduces the force of heart muscle contraction and reduces blood pressure.

  • By reducing the heart rate and the force of muscle contraction, Seloken reduces the amount of oxygen that the heart muscle needs.

  • Seloken is, therefore, helpful in treating angina.

  • Lowering the blood pressure puts less strain on the heart and therefore Seloken improves the pumping efficacy of the heart.

  • It helps the heart to recover and helps to prevent later complications such as heart failure, arrhyhmias or weakness of the heart muscle.

How is Seloken given?
Seloken tablets can be taken with food or on an empty stomach. Seloken durules are a long acting formulation which should be swallowed with liquid. The durules should not be chewed or crushed.

Seloken injection is administered into a vein (intravenously) under medical supervision.

It is very important to take this medicine as often as your doctor has told you to, even if you do not feel ill. This is because heart and blood pressure problems, if not treated, can get progressively worse.

It is also important to follow any lifestyle instructions that your doctor has given to you, like trying to give up smoking, reducing your weight, doing more exercise and eating a healthy diet.
