Nebuhaler® ()
Alternative brand (trade) names:

What is Nebuhaler® ?

This is a spacer device, usually made of plastic, which is used with inhalers to aid medication delivery to the lungs. Although designs differ, all are basically a form of tubing that lengthens the distance from the inhaler's opening to your mouth.

  • The spray from the inhaler is released into the spacer from where you then breathe in the medicine directly.

  • Some spacers resemble accordion-like bags, others are simple tube-like chambers.

What is Nebuhaler® used for?

A Nebuhaler is designed to make the use of an inhaler more comfortable and effective. It helps to make sure the correct amount of medicine is being taken. This applies particularly in:

  • People such as young children or the elderly who use inhalers for treatment of asthma or other lung conditions.

  • Other people who find inhalers difficult to use or irritating to the airways in normal usage.

How does Nebuhaler® work?

The increased distance between your inhaler and your mouth slows the speed of the fine particles of medicine.

  • It increases the chances of the medicine actually reaching your lungs because it is more comfortable to use.

  • Use of a spacer allows you to breathe in several times to maximise the amount of medication taken in from each puff of the inhaler, rather than relying on breathing in only once from an inhaler on its own.

How is Nebuhaler® given?
The Nebuhaler is designed so that your inhaler will fit snugly onto one end and the other end of the Nebuhaler fits comfortably in your mouth. Together, they allow you to breathe in several times, if necessary, to maximise the amount of medication being breathed in, rather than relying on one inhalation with an inhaler on its own.
