Accolate® (zafirlukast)
Alternative brand (trade) names: Vanticon and Accoleit
What is Accolate® ?
Accolate is an anti-inflammatory agent, and is called a leukotriene antagonist; it contains the medicine zafirlukast.
What is Accolate® used for?
Accolate is used to treat long-term asthma and to help prevent asthma attacks. It is intended for use in patients who require more than an occasional “puff” of a bronchodilator (medicine which widens the air passages) for control of their symptoms.
How does Accolate® work ?
Accolate works by directly blocking substances called leukotrienes, which are molecules that contribute to inflammation and narrowing in the airways, a process that leads to symptoms such as difficulty in breathing in patients with asthma. The action of Accolate reduces this inflammation and thus helps to control the symptoms of asthma, and improves lung function.
Even if symptoms are not present, you should keep taking Accolate so it can continue to block the leukotrienes and help give you more control of potential asthma symptoms.
How is Accolate® given ?
Accolate is a tablet that you take twice daily (in the morning and evening) to help control asthma symptoms all day and all night.
