Bricanyl® (terbutaline)

Alternative brand (trade) names:

What is Bricanyl® ?

Bricanyl belongs to a group of asthma treatments called bronchodilators and contains the medicine terbutaline sulphate.

What is Bricanyl® used for?

Bricanyl is used to treat asthma and conditions where there is difficulty in breathing (reversible airways obstruction). It is also used to arrest uncomplicated premature labour.

How does Bricanyl® work ?

Bricanyl is a bronchodilator, which works by relaxing the muscle in the air tubes in the lungs (bronchial tubes), and makes them widen. It does this by stimulating special sites on airway muscle cells called beta-receptors, which normally control the degree of narrowing of the air passages.

  • Bronchodilators are medicines that open up the air passages of the lungs.

  • They are used to treat the symptoms of bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung diseases.

  • Bricanyl relieves cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and troubled breathing by increasing the flow of air through the bronchial tubes.

  • In the uterus (womb), its activity on beta-receptors slows and stops uterine contractions.

How is Bricanyl® given ?

Bricanyl is supplied in several different forms, including inhalers, tablets, syrup and injection. Some inhalers can be used with a spacer device to further improved delivery of medicine to the lung. Inhaled bronchodilators such as Bricanyl can be used whenever the patient needs it (such as during an asthma attack) and are called reliever medications. They provide relief within a few minutes.
