Ramace® (ramipril)
Alternative brand (trade) names: Pramace, Hypren, Unipril and Vesdil.
What is Ramace® ?
Ramace contains the medicine ramipril, which belongs to a group of medicines called ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors.
What is Ramace® used for?
Ramace is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure and heart attack (myocardial infarction).
How does Ramace® work ?
Ramipril is an ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor which blocks the production of a hormone (chemical signal carried in the blood) called angiotensin II.
- Angiotensin II is a chemical that is made by the body, which narrows blood vessels and thereby maintains (elevates) blood pressure.
- ACE is important for the formation of angiotensin II. When ACE is blocked by Ramace, angiotensin cannot be converted into its active form, angiotensin II, and blood pressure falls (due to relaxation and widening of the arteries).
- Lowering the blood pressure puts less strain on the heart and therefore Ramace improves the pumping efficiency of the heart and is used to treat patients with heart failure.
- In some patients who have had a heart attack, Ramace helps the heart to recover and helps to prevent later complications such as heart failure or weakness of the heart muscle.
How is Ramace® given ?
Ramace is supplied as capsules or tablets.
It is very important to take this medicine as often as your doctor has told you to, even if you do not feel ill. This is because heart and blood pressure problems, if not treated, can get progressively worse.
It is also important to follow any lifestyle instructions that your doctor has given to you, like trying to give up smoking, reducing your weight, doing more exercise and eating a healthy diet.
