How does Elavil® work ?
- Amitriptyline is an antidepressant that belongs to a group of medicines called the tricyclic antidepressants
- In some patients with depression, low levels of brain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, may play a part in their depression
- Amitriptyline is thought to improve mood by raising the level of neurotransmitters in brain tissue
- It might take quite a while for anti-depressants to have a noticeable effect on depression.
- The doctor will advise how long treatment should be taken for. Quite often anti-depressants are continued for a while after symptoms have gone away.
How is Elavil® given ?
Elavil is supplied as tablets but it can also be given as a solution for injection, by a health professional.
