Avloclor® (chloroquine)

What is Avloclor® ?

This medicine contains chloroquine phosphate.

What is Avloclor® used for?

  • Avloclor is used mainly to prevent and treat malaria.

  • Avloclor can also be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some skin diseases and liver disease caused by microscopic organisms called protozoa.

How does Avloclor® work ?

  • Avloclor prevents the malarial parasites, which get into the red blood cells of the patient as a result of a bite from an infected mosquito, from multiplying.

  • In rheumatoid arthritis, it reduces the inflammation in the joints which causes the severe pain of the disease.

How is Avloclor® given ?

  • Avloclor is supplied as tablets to be swallowed.

  • For prevention of malaria it is taken once weekly; starting one week before going into an area/country of malaria risk, continuing once weekly while there, and for 4 weeks after leaving the area/country of malaria risk.

  • For treatment of malaria it is taken twice on the first day of dosing and then once daily for 2 further days.
