Surgery

Some patients may need to undergo surgery after a heart attack.

Coronary angioplasty
Coronary angioplasty involves passing, a fine, hollow tube (catheter) into an artery in either your groin or arm. This procedure is conducted under an anaesthetic. The surgeon uses an X-ray screen to direct the tube to the part of the coronary artery which is blocked. When the tube is in place, a small balloon at the tip of the tube is gently inflated so that it opens up the blocked blood vessel.
